Recognize Cellulitis Skin Inflammation

By cepat sehat|11 Mei 2024|Gaya Hidup

Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection that can affect anyone, at any age, and is potentially serious. Beta-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria, generally group A streptococci (namely Streptococcus pyogenes) are the most common bacteria causing cellulitis apart from Staphylococcus aureus. Cellulitis infections are generally without abscesses or purulent discharge. Cellulitis usually appears as a well-defined, warm, erythematous/reddish area accompanied by swelling/edema and pain to the touch. This is caused by an acute bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the inner dermis layer of skin and the surrounding subcutaneous tissue.

Cellulitis is a widespread skin infection, which occurs in the tissue area below the surface of the skin. Cellulitis usually occurs in the lower legs, but can also occur in the face, arms and other areas.

RISK FACTORS

The following are several factors that have the potential to increase the risk of cellulitis, as follows:

  • Injuries/wounds on the skin. Every wound, break, burn, or abrasion on the skin becomes an open place for bacteria to enter the body. Including insect or animal bites can be a risk of cellulitis.
  • The immune system is weakened. Conditions that weaken the immune system – such as diabetes, leukemia and HIV/AIDS – increase the risk of infection. Certain medications can also weaken the immune system.
  • Skin condition. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), athlete's foot, and shingles can cause damage to the skin, which provides an entry point for bacteria.
  • Long-term (chronic) swelling of the arms or legs (lymphedema). This condition sometimes occurs after surgery
  • History of Cellulitis. A history of having had cellulitis before will increase the risk of getting cellulitis again.
  • Overweight. Being overweight increases your risk of developing cellulitis.

SYMPTOM

Cellulitis usually occurs on one side of the body. One or more signs and symptoms can occur, including:

  • Redness of the irritated skin area
  • Swelling
  • Pain especially when pressed
  • The swollen area feels warm
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes near the affected area of skin
  • Spots and blisters on the skin

If symptoms of cellulitis as mentioned above arise, it is recommended to immediately consult a doctor so that they can be treated appropriately.

PREVENTION

  • Check your feet every day. Check your feet regularly for signs of injury so you can catch an infection early.
  • Moisturize your skin regularly. Lubricating the skin helps prevent cracking and peeling. Do not apply moisturizer to open wounds.
  • Trim your finger and toenails carefully. Be careful not to injure the surrounding skin.
  • Protect your hands and feet. Wear footwear and gloves according to your activity.
  • Always keep your skin clean by diligently washing your hands and feet with water and soap, especially after activities outside the home.
  • Treat and care for wounds properly so as not to cause further infection and cause cellulitis.
  • Immediately treat infections on the surface of the skin, such as athlete's foot. Mild skin infections can easily spread from person to person. Treat the infection immediately.
